About Original Support
Original Support provides person-centred personal assistance, companionship and social support for adults across Washington, Sunderland and surrounding areas. We work with adults aged 18+ with learning disabilities as well as older people who may benefit from assistance, companionship and greater opportunities to get out and enjoy everyday life.
Our aim is to help people live fulfilling lives while maintaining as much choice, confidence and independence as possible. We take time to understand each individual, their interests, existing skills and the things they would like to achieve. Support can include building confidence, developing social connections, enjoying hobbies and activities, shopping, attending social events or simply getting out and about without the worry.
We support both funded and private clients, with assistance shaped around the needs and preferences of each person. This might mean providing reassurance and encouragement, helping someone communicate and feel more confident in social situations, or supporting them to build on their existing skills and capabilities.

Practical Support When You Need It
Our support isn’t limited to social activities and days out. We can also provide practical assistance with everyday life, including shopping, light household tasks and attending medical or dental appointments. Where appropriate, we can help with making phone calls relating to appointments or prescriptions.
We understand that the things which matter to someone aren’t always the obvious ones. If a pet is an important part of your life, for example, we can help with everyday tasks such as walking or feeding them.
We can also act as an advocate, helping individuals communicate their wishes and ensuring their views, choices and needs are heard and respected.
Building Social Independence
A large part of what we do is about helping people participate in their community, develop relationships and enjoy experiences they might otherwise find difficult to access.
That could mean meeting other people, attending regular activities, going for a meal, visiting somewhere new or enjoying a favourite hobby. We don’t believe support should simply be about getting someone from A to B — our support workers are there to provide encouragement, companionship and meaningful support throughout the experience.
Every person is different, and not every disability or support need is immediately visible. That’s why our approach starts with the individual rather than a standard package of support.
Personal Assistance, Not Personal Care
Original Support provides personal assistance and social support rather than regulated personal care.
We do not provide personal care services such as assistance with washing, bathing, dressing or toileting. This distinction allows us to concentrate on what Original Support does best: helping people build confidence, maintain independence, enjoy social connections and take part in the activities and everyday experiences that matter to them.
